Maarten Marchau
wooden flutes
Maarten came into contact with the wooden flute in the 1990s, immersing himself in Irish and Breton music traditions and drawing inspiration from masters such as Matt Molloy and Jean-Michel Veillon.
He soon broadened his musical interests to include Scandinavian and Eastern European folk music. Over the years, he performed with an Algerian raï band Djamel, the post-rock collective Humble Grumble, the world music big band Olla Vogala, and several other groups such as Bal des Boiteux and B-Boa.
He later connected with Thomas through their shared interest in combining acoustic instruments with sound processing and loop stations, expanding the sonic possibilities while staying true to the organic character of their instruments.
Since 2017, this collaboration has evolved into the ambient drone project Mótha, where they merge their musical visions.
Alongside his musical work, Maarten is also active as a photographer and visual artist.
